Tax1099’s 4-Step Process To eFile 1099 Returns Quickly & Securely
If you’re a business or a self-employed individual compensating a non-employed party in exchange for their services and the total amount paid is $600 or greater, then you must eFile Form 1099-NEC.
The IRS requires taxpayers to report the vendor tax details, such as the Name and TIN in Form 1099-NEC. If you’re reporting payments made to independent contractors or freelancers, then you must furnish the TIN information of the vendor as well. To obtain the TIN details from the vendor, you can send out a W-9 Form and validate the TIN with IRS TIN Matching prior to filing.
The IRS assess late filing penalties on taxpayers when it doesn’t receive the tax files by the prescribed due dates. Currently, the late filing penalty is around $50 to $270. This amount will go higher if you continue to delay filing your returns. To prevent being penalized, you can eFile before the deadline. You can even schedule your eFiles to avoid missing the due date.
The IRS retains the non-employment compensation reports to validate and verify if the payer, payee, and other intermediaries involved are reporting their incomes and payments accurately. This enables business ecosystems to follow a regulatory reporting protocol and stay compliant. Further, Form 1099-NEC reporting curbs malpractices within certain industries where employees are misclassified as independent contractors.
